Minister Henry Ori Visits Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. Site

On July 19, 2024, Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Henry Ori, visited the Rosebel Gold Mines (RGM) site. Minister Ori and his delegation were received by Mr. Jerry Zhu, the People and Culture Manager at RGM. The visit aimed to enhance relations by gaining a deeper understanding of RGM’s operations, identifying the skills required by the company, and exploring how the ministry can support these needs through various educational channels.

During the visit, the Minister and his delegation were provided with an overview of RGM’s business operations and the different roles and positions within the company. They were also informed on the various programs offered to high school and tertiary graduates, including a graduate internship program currently in progress. The visit featured discussions on how the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and RGM could collaborate to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship. Key topics included internships, scholarships, scarce skills determination, and mentorship programs.

One significant proposal was to conduct a needs assessment to identify scarce skills within RGM and more importantly the mining industry. This assessment would guide the development of specific study paths, directing students toward fields where their skills are most needed. Minister Ori remarked, “The visit marks a promising beginning in forging a strong relationship for the betterment of Suriname.”

In conclusion, it was agreed that a strategic plan would be developed to facilitate further collaborative efforts. Future discussions will continue to focus on the various programs that can be offered. The visit concluded with a tour of RGM’s mine site, providing valuable insight into the skills that can be acquired through practical experience.
