Brokopondo, Suriname – August 7, 2026 – Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM) donated 10 gym mats to MULO Brokopondo, supporting the school in creating a safer and better-equipped environment for students participating in Physical Education activities.
The donation was made in response to a request submitted by the school, which previously did not have gym mats available for its Physical Education program. Approximately 337 of the school’s 383 students are expected to make use of the new equipment.
Although Physical Education is no longer a national examination subject, students are still required to complete school assessments that include practical activities. According to School Director Mrs. Tempo Angelique, having the appropriate equipment is therefore important to ensure that these activities and assessments can be conducted safely and effectively.
The gym mats were handed over on behalf of RGM by Community Relations Officers CherJean Akoi and Sisrian Geddeman and officially received by Mrs. Tempo. Students welcomed the donation with enthusiasm, immediately testing the mats and demonstrating their excitement about having access to the new equipment.
While MULO Brokopondo is not directly classified as one of RGM’s Communities of Interest (CoIs), the school has an important connection to several of these communities. As one of only two MULO schools in the Brokopondo District, it serves students from various communities across the district, including children from RGM’s CoIs. Supporting the school therefore contributes to educational opportunities that extend across a broader part of the Brokopondo community.
Through initiatives such as this donation, RGM continues to respond to identified community needs and support initiatives that contribute to education, youth development, and well-being. The contribution also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being.
By providing practical resources that enhance the learning environment, RGM aims to create shared value and contribute to positive, lasting development in the communities surrounding its operations.
