Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM) strongly condemns the recent shooting and series of violent attacks near the Royal Hill area within the RGM concession.
Around 22:10 on August 9, a security officer on patrol was shot by unauthorized intruders from the forest area. He was struck by six shotgun pellets on his left lower leg. After initial treatment by RGM’s Medical Department, he was moved to the Emergency Room at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo, where he is still receiving care. The Company is actively monitoring his condition and offering support.
This incident was the most severe in a recent series of violent events targeting personnel responsible for safety and order in the mining area. On August 2, a security officer was struck with stones by unauthorized intruders and lost a tooth. Security staff at the pit have also been repeatedly attacked with stones during daily patrols.
These acts of violence demonstrate that the work team responsible for maintaining safety and order in the mining areas faces ongoing and serious threats to their personal safety.
RGM reported these incidents to police. We urge law enforcement to conduct a prompt, thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and hold them accountable under the law. We also call on patrols led by law enforcement to be strengthened and to take lawful, necessary, and proportionate measures to protect lives and public order.
RGM operates lawfully and in compliance with applicable requirements within its concession areas. The Company’s security personnel follow a strict code of conduct based on restraint, de-escalation and non-violent intervention. Despite repeated attacks, they have consistently exercised restraint and continued to maintain safety and operational order through peaceful, non-violent means.

Active mining pits present serious safety risks. This is why we take measures to prevent unauthorized entry. No one working to maintain safety and order should face gunfire, stone attacks or any other form of violence. Everyone has the right to return home safely.
