Zijin Rosebel Employees Gain Cultural Insights During Village Walkabout to Nieuw Ganze

Nieuw Ganze, Brokopondo – June 18, 2026

As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with its Communities of Interest (COIs), Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM), through its Community Relations Department (CRD), successfully conducted the first Village Walkabout of 2026 in the community of Nieuw Ganze.

The Village Walkabout initiative was introduced in 2023 and is organized twice annually to provide employees with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, historical, and social backgrounds of communities surrounding the operation. The visit to Nieuw Ganze marked the seventh edition of the program and follows previous walkabouts to Marchallkreek, Wakibasu, Klaaskreek, Nieuw Lombe, Balingsoela, and Nieuw Koffiekamp.

The primary objective of the initiative is to familiarize employees with the traditions, customs, and history of local communities while promoting mutual respect, understanding, and meaningful engagement. By providing direct interaction with community members, the program helps strengthen the relationship between RGM and its COIs and reinforces the company’s commitment to responsible stakeholder engagement.

During the visit, community representatives shared valuable historical information and insights about Nieuw Ganze. Employees had the opportunity to learn about the village’s cultural heritage, leadership structures, traditions, and way of life. Through presentations and open discussions, participants were encouraged to ask questions and engage directly with community members, creating a valuable platform for dialogue and learning.

One of the key lessons shared during the walkabout was the significance of traditional cultural practices, including rituals surrounding the birth of a child, known locally as “puu mii a doh.” These insights provided participants with a deeper appreciation of the community’s rich cultural heritage and traditions.

The Village Walkabout also highlights the importance of cultural awareness within the workforce. With many community members employed at RGM, understanding local histories, values, and customs contributes to stronger collaboration, improved communication, and greater mutual respect.

RGM extends its sincere appreciation to the residents and leaders of Nieuw Ganze for warmly welcoming participants and sharing their knowledge and experiences. Through initiatives such as the Village Walkabout, Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines continues to promote trust, partnership, and sustainable community engagement while building stronger relationships with the communities that surround its operations.
