Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines Donates Generators to Strengthen Electricity Access in Matawai Communities

Pusugrunu, Brokopondo, Suriname – Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM) has successfully completed the handover of three generators to communities within the Matawai area, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable community development and improving quality of life within its Communities of Interest.

The project originated from requests submitted by community representatives seeking support to improve electricity access and reliability in several remote villages. One request was submitted by the Communication Committee of Kwakoegron on behalf of the communities of Commissariskondre and Makakriki, while a second request was submitted by the Paramount Chief of the Matawai Tribe, Mr. Lesley Valentijn, on behalf of the communities of Pusugrunu, Bethel, Tevreden, Pijetie, and Sukibaka.

Following consultations with traditional authorities, community leaders, government representatives, and other stakeholders, Rosebel Gold Mines conducted an assessment through its Community Relations and Development (CRD) Department. Based on the identified needs, support was approved for the procurement and donation of three generators.

Reliable electricity is essential for households, schools, healthcare services, communication, and economic activities. By improving access to electricity, the project is expected to contribute to better living conditions and create new opportunities for education, entrepreneurship, and community development.

The initiative was implemented through close collaboration between community representatives, traditional authorities, the Ministry of Natural Resources, SURMAC, and Rosebel Gold Mines. The Ministry provided technical guidance regarding generator specifications and will oversee long-term operation and maintenance. SURMAC supplied the generators and further supported the initiative by donating maintenance and service supplies sufficient for one year of operation.

A significant milestone was the successful transportation and installation of the first generator in Kwakoegron, despite logistical challenges caused by difficult road conditions. Through effective collaboration between stakeholders and community representatives, the equipment was delivered safely and successfully.

The project is expected to directly benefit seven communities: Commissariskondre, Makakriki, Pusugrunu, Bethel, Tevreden, Pijetie, and Sukibaka. During the handover ceremony, speakers emphasized the importance of partnerships and collaboration in achieving sustainable development outcomes and highlighted the role of reliable electricity in supporting education, healthcare, communication, and economic growth.

Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative and welcomed the project as an important investment in their future. For Rosebel Gold Mines, the project demonstrates the value of listening to community concerns and working collaboratively with stakeholders to develop practical and sustainable solutions.

Through initiatives such as this, Rosebel Gold Mines remains committed to supporting sustainable development and ensuring that communities can share in the benefits generated through mining activities.
