Pikin Saramacca – On December 17, a ceremony was held to officially hand over three significant projects in the Pikin Saramacca area of the Sipaliwini district. These projects include the upgrade of the drinking water purification and distribution system, the modernization of electrification systems, and the construction of a new log bridge to provide safer access to the communities. Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (“RGM”), through the Rosebel Community Fund (“RCF”), financed these initiatives in response to community requests that identified them as top priorities for regional development.
The ceremony took place at the Krutu Oso in Nieuw Jakob Kondre and was attended by distinguished guests, including the Minister of Natural Resources, H.E. David Abiamofo, the District Commissioner of Upper Saramacca, Mr. Walter Bojaksi, Captain Gideon Mosesi and the Chair of the Rosebel Community Fund and RGM General Manager, Mr. Qianjie Wang.
The drinking water and electrification projects were initiated under a 2021 sponsor agreement between RCF, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the traditional authorities of Pikin Saramacca. The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) conducted by RGM in 2018 revealed that nearly 83% of households consumed impure water, with only 15% treating it before consumption. The report also highlighted the unreliable electricity supply, as communities rely on generator that operate for less than six hours per day due to limited fuel availability. Prolonged fuel shortages result in complete power outages, further deteriorating the quality of life and hindering economic activities.
The upgrades to the water system included rehabilitating the distribution network, installing a modern water purification system, and integrating a solar-powered energy source to ensure reliable, 24-hour operation. Simultaneously, the electrification project introduced a larger-capacity, fuel-efficient generator and upgraded power lines to deliver consistent electricity supply. These improvements are critical to enhancing public health, supporting socio-economic growth, and improving overall living conditions across the four communities.
The new bridge, a priority identified by the traditional authority, addresses the need for safer and more reliable transportation. By replacing unsafe crossing conditions, the bridge ensures secure travel for residents and visitors, while also facilitating better connectivity and economic opportunities.
All three projects were financed by RCF with a total investment of approximately US$ 657,000. To ensure sustainability, RCF has signed a one-year maintenance and training program with the contractor. This agreement will enable proper upkeep and ensure a smooth project handover to the government by next year.
The District Commissioner of Upper Saramacca, Mr. Walter Bojaksi, expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in making these vital projects a reality, in his speech. He emphasized the transformative impact of the drinking water, electrification, and bridge construction projects on the community, highlighting how they address essential needs and improve daily life.
The Minister of Natural Resources, H.E. David Abiamofo, congratulated the community on the successful completion of these transformative projects and thanked all stakeholders for their collaboration. He outlined similar initiatives led by his Ministry, highlighting the critical role of partnerships with organizations like Rosebel Gold Mines, international institutions, and foreign governments in providing funding and expertise. Emphasizing the importance of sustainability, the Minister encouraged the community to make full use of the new facilities and to preserve them as vital resources for future generations.
The Chair of the Rosebel Community Fund and RGM General Manager, Mr. Qianjie Wang congratulated the communities of Pikin Saramacca with this significant milestone. In his speech, he reflected on how water, electricity and a bridge are a cornerstone of sustainable development. With regards to the bridge, he shared a Chinese proverb: “大桥通通人心” (“A bridge passes through the hearts and minds of people”), emphasizing that it is more than just a structure; it is a lifeline connecting communities, enabling trade, and strengthening social bonds. Mr. Wang closed his speech by encouraging the communities to make full use of these new facilities to enhance their development and well-being. He expressed that he looks forward to witnessing their ongoing progress.
These initiatives highlight RGM’s commitment to fostering long-term, positive change and empowering local communities for a sustainable future. Access to clean water promotes better health and sanitation, reliable electricity enhances daily life and supports economic development, and the new bridge strengthens regional infrastructure and connectivity. Rosebel Gold Mines remains dedicated to addressing community needs through impactful, community-driven projects that contribute to lasting progress.
