Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM) has successfully completed the Balingsoela Road Rehabilitation Project, improving approximately 10 kilometers of road and strengthening access to essential services for the Balingsoela community.
Balingsoela is one of RGM’s eight Communities of Interest in the Brokopondo district. The road rehabilitation was identified as an important community need through engagement with the Traditional Authority, Communication Committee and community members.
The project commenced in August 2026 and covered the main road and several spur roads within the community. The works included grading, placement and compaction of road material, replacement of culverts and installation of reflective poles at key locations.
In addition to the planned rehabilitation works, RGM supported several improvements. These included grading the road between Balingsoela and Brokopondo Centrum following the removal of a fallen tree, leveling the school grounds with gravel and cleaning the area between the school and the Suriname River.
The improved road infrastructure provides better access to government and community services, particularly medical care and education. The road to Brokopondo Centrum is especially important for residents seeking medical services.
The Captain of Balingsoela, representing the community’s Traditional Authority, expressed his gratitude and highlighted the appreciation shared by all eight of his basjas:
“We are very grateful for the work that has been carried out. The work was well organized, and the feedback I have received from residents has been positive. All eight of my basjas have also expressed their appreciation. Together, we thank Zijin Rosebel for the work completed in our community.”
The project was coordinated by RGM’s Community Relations and Development Department, with technical support from Infrastructure Services. Community stakeholders remained involved throughout implementation.
Following completion of the works, Infrastructure Services and Community Relations and Development conducted a Quality Assurance and Quality Control inspection on September 2, 2026. The project was subsequently prepared for final handover.
The reported cost of the rehabilitation works was US$70,008.97.
Through initiatives such as the Balingsoela Road Rehabilitation Project, RGM continues to support infrastructure improvements that contribute to safer and more accessible communities in its areas of interest.
