Paramaribo, Suriname – For 49 children from Rosebel Gold Mines’ Communities of Interest, a recent visit to the CCS Effendi Ketwaru Volksmuziekschool offered more than an introduction to musical instruments. It gave them an opportunity to explore, participate and discover talents they may not have known they had.
The children, aged 10 to 13, came from Brownsweg, Klaaskreek, Nieuw Koffiekamp, Nieuw Lombe, Marshallkreek, Kwakoegron and Balingsoela. Accompanied by 10 chaperones, they traveled to Paramaribo for an interactive musical experience focused on creating interest, motivation and inspiration.
During the open day, the children were introduced to guitar, drums and piano or keyboard. Most importantly, they were encouraged to try the instruments themselves. In smaller groups, they moved between the different musical activities, receiving guidance from teachers and students while discovering which instruments captured their interest.
According to Mrs. Naarden, Director of the CCS Volksmuziekschool, the goal was not immediate enrollment in music lessons, but to give the children an experience that could inspire them beyond the visit.
The activity also created a meaningful connection with RGM’s earlier support to the music school. Through the Rosebel Community Fund, RGM supported the participation of students and teachers from the CCS Volksmuziekschool in the International Music Camp in North Dakota, United States. One of those students, Jeslie Ateligiemie, was present during the open day and shared his knowledge and experience with the children. His journey showed them how music education can open doors to personal development, learning and international exposure.
The day ended on a memorable note when all the children came together for a musical moment. Guided by teacher Jason Eduard and accompanied by guitar, they sang together as one group.
The enthusiasm continued even after the children returned home. Community contacts reported that they spoke positively about the visit and eagerly shared what they had learned.
Through experiences like these, RGM continues to create opportunities for young people from its Communities of Interest to explore their abilities, broaden their horizons and, perhaps, discover a passion that can grow with them.
