Brokopondo, Suriname – Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines (RGM) has successfully completed the first edition of its Reading Project, Lees je weg naar succes (Read Your Way to Success), a new literacy initiative designed to strengthen reading and writing skills among Grade 6 pupils in the company’s Communities of Interest (COIs).
Launched in December 2025, the Reading Project replaces the annual Brokopondo School Quiz with a more structured and long-term approach to literacy development. The program was implemented in eight primary schools across the communities of Nieuw Koffiekamp, Brownsweg, Klaaskreek, Nieuw Lombe, Balingsoela, and Marshallkreek, focusing on preparing students for the important transition from primary to secondary education.
Throughout the program, pupils participated in weekly interactive reading sessions aimed at improving reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, writing skills, and overall confidence. The initiative encouraged students to develop a lasting interest in reading while creating an engaging learning environment.
The project featured several activities that reinforced the learning experience. During the Meeleesdag, community members visited participating schools to read stories to pupils, while students also had the opportunity to read aloud to their classmates and visitors, strengthening both their reading abilities and self-confidence.
Another important component was the Creative Writing Activity, where pupils wrote their own stories with the support of their parents or caregivers. This activity promoted creativity while encouraging greater family involvement in children’s education.
The project concluded with a two-day Literacy Activity Fair, where students participated in educational reading and writing games at various activity stations. In line with RGM’s Local First approach, local entrepreneurs from Brokopondo supplied educational games and books, further supporting community participation and local businesses.
The Reading Project not only contributed to improving literacy skills but also strengthened collaboration between RGM, schools, teachers, parents, and community members. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with teachers and school leaders appreciating the additional educational support and pupils enthusiastically embracing the interactive learning activities.
By investing in literacy and education, Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable community development and creating opportunities that empower the next generation. The successful first edition of the Reading Project provides a strong foundation for future initiatives aimed at supporting educational growth within the company’s Communities of Interest.
