Brokopondo, Suriname – Rosebel Gold Mines (RGM), through the Rosebel Community Fund (RCF), has officially handed over two newly constructed teachers’ accommodation buildings in the communities of Brownsweg and Klaaskreek, reaffirming its long-term commitment to education and sustainable community development
The project was initiated to provide teachers with safe, comfortable, and suitable housing close to their schools. By improving teachers’ living conditions and reducing long daily commutes, the initiative aims to strengthen teacher retention, support quality education, and create a more stable learning environment for students.
Each community received one accommodation building comprising two independent housing units. The project was funded by the Rosebel Community Fund and implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the Traditional Authorities of Brownsweg and Klaaskreek, the Stichting Onderwijs der Evangelische Broedergemeente in Suriname (SOEBGS), local contractors, and community representatives.
During the handover ceremonies, speakers highlighted the importance of investing in education and recognized the value of strong partnerships in delivering meaningful and sustainable development projects. They also encouraged the communities and schools to take good care of the facilities so they can continue to benefit teachers for many years to come.
Mr. Soetjipto Verkuijl, Director Sustainability of Rosebel Gold Mines, emphasized that education is one of the company’s key community investment pillars. He noted that providing teachers with a safe, healthy, and supportive living environment contributes to both their well-being and the quality of education. He also highlighted the importance of engaging local contractors, reflecting Rosebel Gold Mines’ commitment to benefit sharing and its purpose of “Mining for a Better Society.”
The project was warmly welcomed by teachers, community members, and education stakeholders, who expressed their appreciation during guided tours of the new accommodations. Rosebel Gold Mines continues to invest in education through additional teachers’ housing initiatives, school improvement projects, and a reading programme in six surrounding communities.
The successful completion of the project demonstrates the value of collaboration between communities, government institutions, traditional authorities, and Rosebel Gold Mines in building stronger communities through education and creating lasting opportunities for future generations.
