Zijin Rosebel Brings Young People Together at Successful Back-to-School Sports Day

Klaaskreek, October 24, 2026 – Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM) successfully held its Back-to-School Sports Day on Saturday, October 24, in Klaaskreek, bringing young people from Brokopondo and Pikin Saramacca together for a day of sport, recreation, and community connection.

Organized through RGM’s Community Relations Department in collaboration with the Ministry of  Youth Development and Sports, the initiative focused on children aged 8 to 14 from the company’s eight communities of interest. The event aimed to encourage physical activity, promote teamwork, and strengthen ties between neighboring communities.

The program combined familiar sports with traditional Surinamese games. Activities included football, tug-of-war, relay races, sack races, slagbal, and djoel. The inclusion of traditional games, known as fosten prey, connected recreation with local cultural heritage and gave young participants an opportunity to enjoy these games together.

Boys and girls took part in team activities that encouraged cooperation, discipline, and perseverance. Representing their respective communities, participants had opportunities to develop their skills, interact with peers from other villages, and experience friendly competition.

The initiative also sought to revive RGM’s annual community sports activity and expand access to organized recreation for young people. By creating opportunities for children to play and learn together, the event supported the company’s broader objectives for youth development and community well-being.

Sport is one of RGM’s four strategic pillars for sustainable community development, alongside healthcare, education, and youth talent development. The Back-to-School Sports Day put this commitment into practice by providing a shared space for physical activity, cultural expression, and positive social interaction.

Through initiatives such as this, Zijin Rosebel continues to support the potential of young people and invest in the communities surrounding its operations.
