Rosebel Gold Mines Partners with the Commission 50 Years Srefidensi to Launch the Nation-Wide Flag Project
Paramaribo, November 11, 2025 – With great respect and a deep sense of national unity, Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. joined the Commission 50 Years Srefidensi for the official kickoff of the Nation-Wide Flag Project, marking a meaningful moment in celebration of Suriname’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
About the Project
The Nation-Wide Flag Project aims to reintroduce the flag parade in primary schools across Suriname, reinforcing the values of solidarity, respect, and nation-building among young students.
Through this initiative, 300 schools across the country will receive a national flag, a flagpole, and a cord, allowing children to take part in this important symbol of national identity.
This project is part of a donation made by Rosebel Gold Mines (through the Rosebel Community Fund) in honor of Suriname’s 50 years of independence. The company’s contribution reflects its ongoing commitment to community development, education, and the nurturing of national values.
Symbolic Start of the Ceremony
The event began with the official raising of the Surinamese national flag, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem. This symbolic act set the tone for the morning, highlighting the essence of unity, respect, and love for country that the Nation-Wide Flag Project seeks to inspire among the nation’s youth.
A Moment of Reflection and Unity
Representing Rosebel Gold Mines, General Manager Mr. Qianjie Wang highlighted the importance of this initiative:
“It is an honor to represent Rosebel Gold Mines at this historic kickoff. To witness the raising of this first flag is to witness the planting of a seed, one that will inspire love and respect for our country in the hearts of young children across Suriname. The simple yet powerful act of raising a flag is a universal expression of belonging. Here in Suriname, it embodies the spirit of vaderlandsliefde love for our country, something we at Rosebel deeply value.”
His message captured the essence of the event, emphasizing that this was not only a ceremony but the beginning of a renewed national consciousness among the next generation.
Honoring the Meaning Behind the Flag
During her speech, Minister Lalinie Gopal of Youth Development and Sport reflected on the symbolism of the Surinamese flag:
“The flag is not just a piece of cloth. Its colors represent the soul of our nation. Green stands for fertility; Suriname is such a fertile land that if you plant even a small branch or stick, something will grow. Red represents the struggle of our ancestors who fought for our freedom. White symbolizes peace and freedom. And the golden star stands for the unity in which we live. We were brought here from different corners of the world, yet today we live together in peace, respecting each other’s culture and heritage.”
Words of Gratitude
In her address, Minister Adelien Wijnerman, Minister of Finance and Planning, expressed appreciation to Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines for supporting the project:
“Before I begin my speech, I would like to thank Zijin for making this moment possible. As a partner, they have supported us in bringing back this beautiful initiative, especially for our children, to help them develop a sense of connection and admiration for our flag.”
The initiative stands as a lasting reminder of Suriname’s shared values and national identity, principles that continue to inspire Rosebel Gold Mines in its community initiatives and partnerships.
“Value Creation and Development for All.”
