Village Walkabout in the community of Nieuw Koffiekamp

On Thursday 18 December 2025, Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. organized a Village Walkabout in the community of Nieuw Koffiekamp. The activity brought together RGM employees and community members for a morning of learning, interaction, and cultural exchange, offering participants a deeper understanding of the community and its heritage.

The Village Walkabout provided a meaningful experience that allowed employees to reflect on the history of Nieuw Koffiekamp and the value the community places on its traditions, customs, and cultural identity. For many participants, the visit offered new insight into the daily life of the community and strengthened understanding of the environment in which RGM works closely with its Communities of Interest.

Although RGM has organized Village Walkabouts in the past, this marked the first time the activity was held in Nieuw Koffiekamp. Through the Community Relations Department, RGM aims to organize Village Walkabouts twice per year as part of its ongoing commitment to familiarizing employees with the communities surrounding its operations. Earlier in the year, a similar activity was organized in Balingsoela.

During the walkabout, participants learned about the historical and cultural background of Nieuw Koffiekamp. It was shared that the village is named after Mr. Koffie, the founder of Koffiekamp, and that the original settlement was once located on the opposite side of the railway track. Community representatives also explained the structure of the village, which consists of three sections known as Maipa ondo, Bakambuyu, and Ganda Kampu. These insights contributed to a broader appreciation of the community’s identity and Maroon heritage.

The visit to RGM implemented projects within the community added significant value to the experience. Employees who do not regularly visit the village gained clearer insight into the purpose and impact of community projects and how these initiatives contribute to local development. One of the highlights was the visit to the renovated kee wosu, where the Chairperson of the Nieuw Koffiekamp Community Committee explained its cultural significance and the rituals associated with the building.

The walkabout was well organized, with transport, timing, and guidance managed efficiently. Upon arrival, participants were welcomed by the Community Committee Chairperson, the village captain, and basjas, who guided the group through various locations and provided explanations along the way. Prior to the event, participants received a clear walkabout plan, and engagement with the community took place in advance to align on purpose and planning. Food, snacks, and beverages were adequately arranged for all participants and were supplied by a local vendor

Interaction between RGM employees and community members was respectful and open throughout the visit. Employees actively listened, asked questions, and participated in cultural dances. Translations were provided by members of the Community Relations team where needed, ensuring inclusive communication. The interaction with schoolchildren stood out as particularly positive, as the children engaged enthusiastically and showed great curiosity.

The walkabout contributed to strengthening connections between RGM and its communities of interest. The community welcomed the RGM team openly, and as a gesture of appreciation for their hospitality and participation, a token of appreciation was presented to community members. Such activities help deepen mutual understanding and reinforce long term, respectful relationships.

An additional highlight of the visit was a generous donation by Chinese contractors working at Rosebel Gold Mines N.V., who presented a freezer to the primary school in Nieuw Koffiekamp. The freezer will support school activities by allowing refreshments to be prepared and sold during events, while also enabling children to keep their drinks cool during school hours.

The Village Walkabout once again demonstrated the value of direct engagement, cultural exchange, and learning. RGM remains committed to continuing these initiatives, as they play an important role in strengthening relationships with Communities of Interest and fostering mutual respect and understanding for the future.
