Brownsweg, October 25, 2025 — Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM), through its Community Relations Department (CRD), hosted the inaugural Brokopondo Sport Day 2025 at the Bigi Wey Stadion in Brownsweg. The event brought together more than 350 youngsters from the Brokopondo district for a full day of fun, sportsmanship, and community bonding.

Encouraging Youth Development and Healthy Lifestyles

The initiative aimed to promote physical activity and youth engagement, while instilling values such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience. RGM continues to reinforce its commitment to sustainable community development through activities that support education, sports, and overall well-being in its surrounding communities.

The event opened with a ceremonial kickoff led by Mr. Enrique Ralim, Director of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sport, alongside Mr. Jerry Finisie, RGM’s Community Relations Manager, and community leaders including Captain Lambertus Waandels of Brownsweg and Mr. Wilfred Pokie, representative of the District Commissioner.

Engaging Games and Inspiring Messages

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a variety of sporting games and activities facilitated by TWU Fitness, which was contracted by CRD to execute the day’s program. Background music provided by a local soundman energized the atmosphere and kept spirits high.

During his opening remarks, Director Ralim encouraged the youngsters to seize opportunities that help shape a stronger and healthier future for Suriname.

“Make use of the opportunities you get, as they will aid in building a stronger and healthier Suriname,” he stated.

A Memorable Kickoff and Promising Future

The ceremonial kickoff, featuring both Ralim and Finisie alongside two young participants, marked one of the highlights of the day. Many attendees shared their excitement, expressing how much they enjoyed the activities and how insightful they found the lessons on teamwork and perseverance.

In closing, Mr. Finisie announced plans to collaborate with Director Ralim for the next edition in 2026, solidifying the foundation for what is expected to become an annual event celebrating youth development and community unity under the motto:

“Strong Minds, Strong Bodies, to Make a Strong Start!”
