In the RGM organization, traditionally considered a male-dominated environment, we are proud to have over 200 women actively contributing to our mining operations on a daily basis. As we celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we took the opportunity to speak with some of our colleagues working in our mines, to share their experience in light of this year’s theme: “Inspire Inclusion.”
Reginia Main, 41 | Haul truck operator, Rosebel Pits | 5 years at RGM
“From a young age, I dreamed of driving a haul truck. My mother told me then that it was only for men, but I pursued my dream anyway. Before working at Rosebel, I drove 12-wheeler timber trucks, so I already had experience operating heavy equipment. However, I learned a lot through my work at Rosebel. I always feel included in the group. The night shift can be challenging at times, but the men in the team encourage me to be tough. Working with the men here at Rosebel is enjoyable and pleasant.”
IWD message to RGM-Women: “Chase your dreams and keep pushing forward.”
Monique Boedhai, 52 | Excavator operator, Mill Feeder | 18 years at RGM
“I started at Rosebel as a Haul truck driver and did so for 12 years. However, due to a leg injury, I had to switch to operating an Excavator. Heavy equipment operation wasn’t always my dream; in fact, I wanted to be a midwife when I was younger. But today, I can confidently say that I’m doing work that I enjoy, and I’m well compensated for it. Working in a male-dominated environment isn’t always easy, but I can hold my own. I adapt, and I’ve been able to take advantage of the opportunities provided by this inclusive work environment.”
IWD message to RGM-Women: “Don’t give up; you’re here for a purpose, so keep that in mind. You must have determination, be willing to learn, love your job, and enjoy the fun moments.”
Jo-ann Booboo, 34 | Haul truck operator, Rosebel pits | 3 years at RGM
“This work is quite fun and interesting. You have to have some guts and be well focused. I like working at night best because it’s a little more relaxed then. At the Mine Operations department where I am, they do have an inclusive approach; the gentlemen are always very helpful, and they are happy to teach you how to do your job better. I really feel like a princess among them.”
IWD message to RGM-Women: “If you want to work, just seize the opportunities in front of you. If you don’t try something you won’t know if you can actually do it. Dare to do.”
Omanda Adjaiso, 34 | Haul truck operator, Rosebel pits | 8 months at RGM
“I absolutely enjoy my job and value the company’s inclusive environment. Taking the leap to apply for this position was definitely worth it, and surprisingly, I find working alongside men quite enjoyable. Their willingness to lend a hand and provide support whenever necessary is truly commendable.”
IWD message to RGM-Women: “Remember to always stay true to yourself and have clear goals in mind. Continuously investing in self-improvement will undoubtedly enhance your skills in the workplace, and maintaining a friendly demeanor will go a long way in fostering positive relationships.”
Priyanka Archer, 31 | Haul truck operator, Rosebel pits | 3 years at RGM
“I initially began my career working with heavy equipment at another company, operating 10-wheeler trucks and excavators. However, once I laid eyes on a haul truck in real life, I couldn’t resist the urge to give it a try. It’s been an exhilarating journey thus far—a mix of challenge and occasional danger. Sometimes the truck can sway unexpectedly, especially in rainy conditions, posing risks. Yet, amidst the dangers, I thrive on the excitement it brings. For me, inclusivity means creating a workplace where everyone feels comfortable, regardless of their ethnicity or gender. At Rosebel, this is exactly what I’ve experienced. Despite being short in stature, I’ve been given the opportunity to operate three different types of trucks. It’s a testament to their commitment to providing fair opportunities to all employees.”
IWD message to RGM-Women: “Never underestimate yourself. Whatever tasks men can accomplish, we are equally capable of doing. If you convince yourself otherwise, you’ll remain stagnant. Always believe in your abilities and continue to educate yourself. Don’t shy away from opportunities for further learning; instead, seize them with determination.”
