Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. launched its new reading initiative “Lees je weg naar succes” (“Read Your Way to Success”) on Wednesday 17 December at the Johannes Kwamieschool in Nieuw Koffiekamp. The project is aimed at strengthening foundational reading skills among Grade 8 students in selected Communities of Interest in Brokopondo, while also fostering a lasting appreciation for reading.
The initiative focuses on improving reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and confidence through structured and interactive reading sessions combined with reflection tools. By doing so, the project contributes to sustainable educational development and supports students in their transition from primary to secondary education.
Focus on a critical learning phase
Grade 8 was deliberately chosen as the target group, as this stage represents a crucial transition point in a student’s educational journey. Reading comprehension forms the basis for learning across all subjects in secondary education, making strong literacy skills essential for academic success. Strengthening reading skills at this level also supports students in preparing for their final primary school examinations, which determine readiness for secondary education.
The project is being implemented in selected Communities of Interest in Brokopondo, including Nieuw Koffiekamp, Brownsweg, Klaaskreek, Nieuw Lombe, Balingsoela, and Marshallkreek.
Successful and engaging launch
The launch event at the Johannes Kwamieschool unfolded in a positive and engaging atmosphere. Students, teachers, community representatives, and partners gathered to officially mark the start of the project. During the event, the objectives of the initiative were clearly explained, and students were encouraged to actively participate in the upcoming reading activities.
Johannes Kwamieschool was selected as the launch location due to its close proximity to Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. As a neighboring community with strong existing ties to the company, Nieuw Koffiekamp represents RGM’s commitment to investing in educational opportunities for communities closest to its operations.
Key stakeholders present included representatives of Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. Community Relations Department, the Foundation for Research and Development in the Caribbean as technical executor, schoolteachers, members of the Traditional Authority, other community representatives, and representatives of the District Commissioner of Brokopondo.
Positive response from students and community
Although students were initially shy and reserved, their engagement grew as the event progressed. Through targeted questions and interaction, students became more open and involved. Toward the end of the launch, one student addressed his peers, encouraging them to read more and emphasizing the importance of reading as a way to gain knowledge.
Teachers and school leadership played a supportive and motivating role throughout the event. They openly acknowledged that reading comprehension is a challenge and emphasized that the project directly addresses this issue. From the preparation stage, the school leader, Mrs. Main, strongly advocated for the inclusion of all Grade 8 students, expressing her conviction that every student would benefit from the initiative.
The local community also showed strong interest and support. Representatives, including members of the Traditional Authority, highlighted the importance of literacy for the future of their children, laying a solid foundation for continued community involvement.
Building skills for long term development
The project addresses challenges such as low reading comprehension, limited vocabulary, weak reading fluency, and inconsistent reading habits among students in Brokopondo. Over the years, including through annual school quizzes organized by RGM since 2012, gaps in foundational literacy skills have become evident. These gaps often limit academic performance and future opportunities.
By providing structured, engaging, and contextually relevant literacy support, “Lees je weg naar succes” aims to improve students’ reading abilities and motivation, helping them build a strong foundation for academic achievement and lifelong learning.
Expected outcomes include improved reading comprehension and vocabulary, increased confidence in reading aloud and discussing texts, stronger reflection skills, and greater motivation to read independently both inside and outside the classroom.
Monitoring progress and next steps
Student progress will be monitored through pre and post reading assessments, regular observation during sessions, and the use of reading journey journals that allow both students and facilitators to track development and reflect on learning.
Planned follow up activities include weekly interactive reading sessions, a Meeleesdag at the end of the first phase, creative writing activities during the second phase, and a final literacy fair where students can celebrate their achievements.
Although the launch took place at the Johannes Kwamieschool, a total of eight schools have been selected to participate in the initiative. This project marks the first time RGM is implementing this approach, replacing the annual Brokopondo School Quiz with a more structured and long term literacy intervention.
Shared responsibility
During the launch, Captain Eersteling addressed the students with a powerful message on the importance of literacy. He emphasized that reading and writing Dutch are essential skills for personal development and future opportunities. Teacher Mrs. Pinas also highlighted the need for additional reading support, noting that while students are capable, they benefit greatly from structured guidance.
The success of “Lees je weg naar succes” depends on shared responsibility. When schools, parents, and communities work together to support reading, children thrive. Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. encourages everyone to continue motivating students, valuing reading both at home and at school, and celebrating every step forward in their reading journey.
