RGM Hands Over “Gaawan Osu” Mourning Facility to Nieuw Koffiekamp Community Nieuw Koffiekamp

Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V., through the Rosebel Community Fund, formally handed over the newly constructed “Gaawan Osu” mourning facility to the community of Nieuw Koffiekamp on February 10, 2026. The project represents a continued effort to support culturally significant infrastructure within one of RGM’s communities of interest.

Supporting Cultural and Social Needs

The Gaawan Osu was constructed to provide residents with a dedicated, culturally appropriate space to say farewell to their loved ones. The facility reflects the spiritual, emotional, and social traditions of the community and offers a dignified setting for traditional mourning practices.

Nieuw Koffiekamp was selected following a request from the village itself. As part of its continued investment in local community development, RGM committed to funding the project in alignment with its broader corporate social responsibility approach and ESG principles, particularly Caring for Society. The initiative also supports Sustainable Development Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, by strengthening community infrastructure rooted in local traditions.

Community Involvement and Partnership

The construction was executed by local contractor Baska NV, ensuring community participation in the implementation phase. The Traditional Authority regularly monitored the progress of the works.

In addition, the community demonstrated ownership by financing an extension to the original design using community funds.

The collaboration between the Rosebel Community Fund and the village leadership was characterized by clear communication and aligned objectives throughout the implementation of the project.

Handover Ceremony

The handover took place in an atmosphere of appreciation and togetherness. A notable moment during the ceremony was when community members entered the facility for the first time after the official opening.

In his address, the General Manager emphasized that the project reflects partnership and mutual respect. He noted that supporting the cultural needs of communities is just as important as supporting broader development initiatives.

Looking Ahead

The facility will be managed and maintained by the community in accordance with their customs and traditions.

Additional projects planned for Nieuw Koffiekamp in the near future include the renovation of the primary school and the teachers’ accommodation.

With the completion of the Gaawan Osu, RGM reaffirms its commitment to constructive engagement and continued dialogue with the community of Nieuw Koffiekamp, focusing on practical initiatives that respond to community needs.
